Planning steel columns & posts in Cheshire
A steel column is an upright structural element that collects the load from a beam, floor or roof and carries it down to a foundation. In homes it is usually a square or circular hollow section or a universal column, welded to a base plate fixed to a concrete pad, and sized by a structural engineer for the load it carries.
Steel columns & posts in Cheshire follows the same careful process wherever the property is: a survey, an engineer's design, the right approval and safe temporary works. We can survey in places such as Great Sankey, Crewe and Ellesmere Port Town and the villages around them. We price it all up front so there are no surprises once the wall is open.
Worth knowing before you start
- Placing a post well can make an open-plan room work better. It can mark the edge of a kitchen island, frame a dining area or line up with a worktop end, so it reads as part of the design rather than an obstruction.
- The base plate is welded to the foot of the column and fixed to the pad with holding-down bolts. A cap plate at the top bolts to the beam above, so the two act together and the beam cannot slide off its support.
- A post is needed when a beam has nothing adequate to bear on, or when a span is long enough that a central support gives a shallower, lighter beam. The engineer weighs up a column against a deeper beam for each layout.
- Adding a structural column is building work that building control needs to approve, with the pad usually inspected before concrete and the column before it is covered. The completion certificate at the end is the record to keep for any future sale.
- Exposed columns are commonly protected with intumescent paint applied to the thickness the specification calls for, which keeps a slim profile. Boxed columns are clad in fire-rated plasterboard and finished with corner beads, skim and a skirting to match the room.
What happens, step by step
Free visit
A short visit to Cheshire to see the job, agree what you want and check the bearings, floors and services that affect the design.
Calculations
The engineer's calculations and a simple drawing are prepared for your opening and shared with you before anything is ordered.
Building control
We submit a building notice or full plans application to the local council's building control team, so approval is in place before the wall is touched.
Steel in, made good
On site we prop, open up, fit and pack the steel, then fire protect, box in and plaster once the inspection is done.

Approvals in Cheshire
In England, taking out a load-bearing wall or putting in a beam is building work under the Building Regulations 2010. It needs approval from building control, either the local council's building control team or a registered building control approver, through a full plans application or a building notice. Part A covers the structure and Part B covers fire safety, which is why steel in homes is usually fire protected.
Terraced and semi-detached homes often need party wall notices, because cutting into a shared wall to take a beam end is notifiable under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. Allow at least two months for the notice period unless your neighbour agrees sooner.

Steel columns & posts in Cheshire: your questions
What happens at the survey visit in Cheshire?
We look at the wall, the floor and ceiling either side and what sits above, measure the opening you want, and note cables, pipes and access for the steel. It usually takes under an hour and there is no charge.
Do you cover Cheshire for steel columns & posts?
Yes. We carry out steel columns & posts in Cheshire. Book a free survey visit and we will check the wall, arrange the engineer's calculations and send an itemised written quote.
Can a steel post replace a supporting wall?
Yes, in many layouts a wall can come out with a beam above it and one or more posts taking the beam's load down to the ground. This keeps most of the openness while shortening the span. The engineer decides how many posts are needed and where they can go.
Does a steel column need a foundation?
Almost always, yes. A column puts a concentrated load onto a small patch of ground, and most floor slabs are not designed for that. The engineer specifies a concrete pad of a set size and depth, building control usually inspects the hole before concrete is poured, and the column is bolted down once the pad has cured.
Can you replace an old timber or cast iron post?
Usually, yes. Old posts in cellars, garages and converted shops are often undersized, rotten or of unknown strength. The engineer assesses the load they carry and specifies a new steel column and pad. The structure is propped while the old post comes out, and the new column is packed tight before the props are removed.
Can a steel column be left exposed?
Yes, many people leave a column on show, painted to suit the room. In homes exposed steel commonly needs fire protection, often intumescent paint applied to the specified thickness as part of a compatible paint system. Building control checks the protection meets what was specified. Boxing in with fire-rated plasterboard is the alternative where a hidden column is preferred.
How much do steel columns & posts cost in Cheshire?
As a guide, budget £480–£1,440 per column including VAT for steel column or post in Cheshire, based on published UK cost guides adjusted for prices in the North West (-4%). The exact figure depends on the span, what the wall carries, access and the finish, and is fixed in writing once the scope is agreed.
