Do you employ the structural engineer?
We arrange calculations from a qualified independent structural engineer as part of our quote, so you deal with one company. You can also use your own engineer.
Is a building notice or full plans better?
In England, a building notice is quicker for straightforward domestic work, but full plans gives you an approved design before work starts. For complex jobs, or where a lender needs certainty, full plans is often the better route. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own routes, set out on our building rules pages.
Does every steel beam need fire protection?
Not always, but steel in homes commonly needs protection so it keeps its strength in a fire for the period the regulations require. Building control confirms what is needed for your property.
