What structural calculations involve in Lancashire

Structural calculations are an engineer's written design showing that a beam, column or other structural element can safely carry the loads placed on it. For steel beam work they set out the loads from floors, walls and roof, the steel section, the padstones or columns at each end and any propping requirements, and they are submitted to building control.

From the first survey visit to the completion certificate, we take care of structural calculations across Lancashire. We can survey in places such as Darwen, Blackburn and Skelmersdale and the villages around them. The engineer sizes the steel, we deal with building control, and our team fits and packs the beam before making good.

Things to plan for

  • Accurate site information is essential. The engineer needs real spans, joist directions, wall build-ups and what sits above, so a site visit or detailed survey usually comes before any calculations. Guesswork from estate agent floor plans is not enough.
  • A load take-down traces every weight that reaches the beam, from roof tiles and snow to upstairs walls, furniture and people. Getting this right matters as much as the beam choice itself, because an underestimated load makes every later check wrong.
  • A typical calculation pack covers the loads assumed, the beam section chosen, checks for bending, shear and deflection, the bearing and padstone design, and any column or foundation design. It is usually accompanied by a drawing or sketch showing positions.
  • Keep the final calculations and drawings with the building control completion certificate. Together they show a future buyer, lender or surveyor exactly what was installed and why, and they help any later alterations to build on a known design.
  • Calculations can also cover how the structure is held up during the work. For straightforward openings this may be a note on prop positions, while larger or more complex jobs may need a separate temporary works design.

How the job runs in Lancashire

  1. Look and measure

We check the wall, the span you want and what the wall is carrying, and photograph anything the engineer needs to see.

  2. Design and price

Calculations come back from the engineer and we confirm your fixed written price, line by line.

  3. Building control

We submit a building notice or full plans application to the local council's building control team, so approval is in place before the wall is touched.

  4. Fit, inspect, finish

The work is propped and the steel installed and packed tight. After inspection the opening is boxed, plastered and left clean.

What do structural calculations cost in Lancashire?

As a guide, budget £240–£720 including VAT for structural calculations for a beam in Lancashire, based on published UK cost guides adjusted for prices in the North West (-4%).

Building rules for Lancashire

In England, taking out a load-bearing wall or putting in a beam is building work under the Building Regulations 2010. It needs approval from building control, either the local council's building control team or a registered building control approver, through a full plans application or a building notice. Part A covers the structure and Part B covers fire safety, which is why steel in homes is usually fire protected.

If the beam bears into a wall you share with a neighbour, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 applies, and a party structure notice must be served at least two months before that work starts. We arrange this through a party wall surveyor.

Structural calculations in Lancashire: your questions

Do you cover Lancashire for structural calculations?

Yes. We carry out structural calculations in Lancashire. Book a free survey visit and we will check the wall, arrange the engineer's calculations and send an itemised written quote.

How much do structural calculations cost in Lancashire?

As a guide, budget £240–£720 including VAT for structural calculations for a beam in Lancashire, based on published UK cost guides adjusted for prices in the North West (-4%). The exact figure depends on the span, what the wall carries, access and the finish, and is fixed in writing once the scope is agreed.

What is a load take-down?

A load take-down is the part of the calculations that adds up every load reaching a beam or column and follows it down to the ground. It includes the roof, floors, walls, people, furniture and, where relevant, snow and wind. Each element along that path is then checked to make sure it can carry its share.

Do I need structural calculations to remove a wall?

Yes, if the wall is load-bearing. Building control needs calculations showing that the new beam, its bearings and anything supporting it can carry the loads safely. Non-structural stud partitions normally do not need them, but an engineer should confirm a wall is non-structural before anyone assumes it.

Do structural calculations tell you which beam to buy?

Yes. The calculations specify the steel section, its grade and length, and the padstones or columns it needs, so the fabricator can supply exactly what was designed. Substituting a different beam on site without the engineer's agreement would leave the work out of line with the approved design.

Can a builder size a steel beam without an engineer?

Not for building control purposes. Building control normally expects calculations from a qualified structural engineer showing the beam is adequate for the actual loads. Rules of thumb do not account for what sits above or how the ends are supported, which is why we always work from an engineer's design.
